"H.A.R.P" Mantra for Guitar Practice

One of the best ways to improve playing guitar and general musicianship is to expose oneself to great music, either through live performance or recordings. Regardless there are some powerful ways to improve your playing and take it to another level. Playing guitar is fun however mastering guitar is a discipline.

Here I have compiled the H.A.R.P Mantra that I teach my students to get most out of their Guitar Practice.

Habit

Practice Habit

It is important to develop good habits early to set

up a lifetime of pleasure and reward. How your practice is how you play.

Follow a schedule

Always do warmup exercises

Set a Goal Record yourself

Keep your practice room in order

Keep a log of routine

Area

Practice Area

Mark an area in the home for regular practice.

Make sure the room has all of the following things:-

Instruments,

Music stand,

Stationery,

Adequate lighting,

Proper ventilation,

Power outlets,

Internet connectivity,

Music system,

Pc/Laptop,

A comfortable chair.

You can keep some munchies and beverages for the time you feel hungry, this will make sure you don't leave the room and lose all the vibe you created while practicing.

Regularly

Practice Regularly

It is better to practice four times a week for twenty minutes, rather than only once a week for an hour.

Regular practice will increase your efficiency, make learning easy, and will improve your retention of musical ideas, pieces, and songs. It is a good idea to keep a record of your practices to help maintain a routine.

Private

Practice in Private

The practice is the most intimate time one spends with their instruments

You should be able to concentrate on the music without distractions.

During private practice you have the freedom to make mistakes and not feel bad about it.

One can make all the funny faces, physical gestures and cuss themselves without thinking and enjoy the flow of the practice session

Practicing in front of family and friends can make you feel self-conscious, and spend energy worrying about what the “audience” may think.
