I have been giving piano lessons to young learners for a while. I have been asked this many times: “What is the best age to start piano lessons?”
One can begin with piano lessons at any point in time in adolescence, but how do you make sure what is the right age for your child?
There is no fixed process to understand if your child is ready though you can follow this checklist:
1.Hand & finger size
Your child should be able to cover five white keys within the span of the thumb and the little finger. It will make sure that the hands have grown enough to be comfortable using the piano or a keyboard.
2. Independence of Fingers
Finger independence refers to the movement of fingers individually in both the hands.
Parents can conduct a simple wiggle test to check finger independence of their children, ask your child to hold their hands up and move, say, only their right-hand ring finger. If they can do this with all their fingers, they have passed the wriggle test.
Parents can practice wriggle exercises with their children to help them get ready for piano lessons.
3. A liking for music
The child should incline towards music.
Nobody likes forced fun. If the child has a liking towards the piano then you can expect them to succeed because of their desire. If that energy isn’t present, you can work on building a conducive atmosphere for the musical development of your child.
A child who ticks on all the above checklist, the piano lessons should be initiated as soon as possible!
Parents should take the opportunity to introduce their young child’s mind in the language of music.
The recommended checklist is normally achieved by the age of 6.
Studying music at any age is great for physical, mental, and spiritual development, and something to enjoy for a lifetime.
